The Blue Lagoon

Vikingheimar (Viking World)

map

Víkingabraut 1, Njarðvík; heading west along Route 41, look for the cube-shaped building on the coast, about 5km before Keflavík town vikingaheimar.is/en. Feb–Oct 7am–6pm; Nov–Jan check website for hours. 1500kr.

Despite their reputation as fearsome warriors, the Vikings were also great traders and travellers, and the centrepiece of Vikingheimar is the Íslendingur, a full-sized replica Viking longship. Before finding a home here, this working model crossed the Atlantic in 2000 to celebrate Leifur Eiríksson’s discovery of “Vinland” (America), one thousand years earlier. The clinker-built wooden vessel is broad-beamed and must have been fairly stable, but it would still have taken some nerve to brave an Atlantic crossing without so much as a cabin to shelter under; you can walk around on deck, imagining what being crammed alongside a bunch of seasick freebooters and their livestock must have been like. Aside from the ship, the museum has an account of the brief Viking settlement of Vinland (poor rations and harsh weather eventually drove them back) and some period remains found locally, plus a multimedia exhibition on Viking myths.
